Michigan State recruiting missed out on a top 2018 target in four-star wide receiver Micah Jones who committed to Notre Dame.

Michigan State has gotten off to a hot start in its 2018 football recruiting class, but there’s one program that has done even better: Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish just trumped the Spartans for another top recruit on Friday afternoon as four-star wide out Micah Jones picked Notre Dame.

The Spartans were one of the finalists for the Gurnee, Ill., wide out, as was Iowa, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Northwestern and Illinois — along with obviously the Fighting Irish. He chose Notre Dame on Friday and it was no surprise to those following his recruitment as Brian Kelly had been picking up momentum.

However, the Spartans do have a commitment from four-star wide out Joseph Scates, a top-150 prospect for 2018, currently who is the same type of receiver as Jones. While Jones may have been high on Michigan State’s board of targets, having Scates eases that loss.

The Spartans missed out on four-star defensive back Kalon Gervin from Cass Tech earlier this week to Kelly’s Fighting Irish. Mark Dantonio must do a better job of closing on the in-state kids while Jones’ decision to commit to Notre Dame is no surprise.

Jones is ranked the No. 289 overall recruit and 47th-best receiver in the class, according to 247Sports. Notre Dame has a history of producing top receivers and the 6-foot-5 wide out could very well join that list to make the next level.
