The 2017 quarterback battle for Michigan State football is approaching and sophomore Brian Lewerke appears to have the early edge.

Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio was recently quoted on Mlive about how impressed he was with incoming freshman quarterback Rocky Lombardi’s athleticism and football IQ. The quarterback battle is wide open and Lombardi is a competitive player as is the favorite to start, Brian Lewerke.

Lewerke has the advantage of being in the system for two years and he played well last season. In fact, if it hadn’t been for a broken leg suffered in the Michigan game, then the outcome could have been different.

Seemingly lost in the mix is soon-to-be senior dual-threat Damion Terry, who had all the hype coming in his freshman season. Terry is an excellent athlete who has had trouble staying on the field throughout his career. He showed promise in the first quarter of the Penn State game.

Then there’s Messiah deWeaver who Dantonio refused to remove the redshirt on last year. deWeaver looked fairly good in limited action in the Green and White scrimmage last April. He’s the guy who no one is talking about that I will be interested to watch in this year’s spring contest. He’s known as a highly accurate passer. He also has an athletic element to his game.

Much like last season this quarterback battle will most likely be dragged out into early August, but I expect it to be a two-man race between deWeaver and Lewerke.
