Darqueze Dennard, star defensive back in the dreaded “No-Fly Zone” defense will not have to travel very far to take his next step in the professional game as he was drafted in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Dennard only allowed completions on just 23.7 percent of all opponent passes traveling 15 yards or more.
The Reason why he fits so well in the Bengals defense is that their two starting cornerbacks are at least 30 years old, with Terrence Newman being 35 and his time as a pro is rapidly coming to an end. In addition Leon Hall has had his Achilles tendon surgically repaired twice since 2011 and his speed will greatly diminish as a result of the procedures. While Darqueze Dennard might not start week one of the 2014 season; however he will make an impact and earn a starting spot by season’s end.
Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis will fall in love with Darqueze Dennard’s style of play is what he expects out of his defenders: being an instinctive, press-man cover man who brings intensity, confidence and competitiveness to the position. It will make players like A.J. Green better wide receivers, and force opposing team’s wide receivers to be better athletes also. Playing against quarterbacks Joe Flacco for the Baltimore Ravens and Ben Roethlisberger for the Pittsburgh Steelers two times a year will only make his game better as they are two of the premier players in the entire league. Additionally, he will likely get two cracks at the Cleveland Browns’ Johnny Manziel this year as well so he also get to play against the most talked about football player in recent memory.
All and all, Darqueze Dennard should make us proud to remember how well he played on Saturday on Sundays for at least the next decade, ideally in nearby Cincinnati. With it being under five hours away to Paul Brown Stadium, let’s make a road trip sometime and cheer our star cornerback on!
