The Women’s Big Ten title hung in the balance tonight as Michigan State Head Coach Suzy Merchant and the 21st ranked Spartans (13-3, 21-8) went head-to-head with an 18-10 Indiana squad who have struggled in league play this season with a 5-10 record.
The Lady Spartans clinched a share of the Big Ten title with a resounding 76-56 victory over Indiana to finish tied with No. 8 Penn State (13-3, 22-6) in league play.
Merchant’s team displayed a diversified scoring attack which saw four of her five starters scoring in double digits led by Aerial Powers’ double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Tori Jankoska added 15 points and seven rebounds and Forward Annalise Pickrel added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Indiana relied on their bench for much of their offense as the starters struggled to get the offense rolling outscoring them 34-22. Indiana’s reserve Forward Lyndsay Leikem lead the Hoosiers with 11 points and five rebounds followed by Guard Taylor Agler and reserve Forward Milika Taufa with seven points each.
The Spartans offense has been on a 9-1 roll since the end of January averaging 73.9 points while allowing 61.3 points per game. They will take their balanced attack to the NCAA Women’s Tournament and try to make it to the Final Four in Nashville on April 6th.
