The wait is finally over. After a long 7 month wait its finally game day. The Michigan State Spartans open the season tonight against in state foe Western Michigan at 8pm on the Big Ten Network.
What to Expect
Western Michigan will be breaking in a new head coach and will have to deal with the loss of their stud sophomore receiver Jamie Wilson. Western will also be breaking in a new quarterback (kind of) in Tyler Van Tubbergen. TVT did see time at quarterback last season up until Alex Carder came back from injury. The offense for the Broncos averaged 29 points per game in 2012, but I expect that number to be a lot lower this year starting with the first game of the season. The Broncos are going against one of the best defenses in the entire country on paper that has been ranked in the top 10 in total defense each of the past 2 seasons. I expect it to be a long day for the Bronco offense going against the experienced and talented defense the Spartans possess.
As for Michigan State, they will be breaking in a new crop of running backs. Jeremy Langford will be the starting running back after having a very strong fall camp. Riley Bullough will also be seeing time at running back, but I think that will mostly be in short yardage situations. As for the quarterbacks, Dantonio did name senior Andrew Maxwell as the starter, but expect backup Connor Cook to play tonight. The wide receivers should take a big step forward this season after struggling mightily last season. Aaron Burbridge should emerge as a star this season, and MacGarrett Kings could be a breakout candidate this season.
So Who Wins?
Michigan State SHOULD win this game pretty easily. Maxwell throws for 2 tds in the first half and Langford runs for 1. The defense creates 2 turnovers in the first half and gets 1 more in the second half.
