The Michigan State Spartans held their first fall scrimmage on Saturday morning at Spartan Stadium with Head coach Mark Dantonio utilizing a “situational” scrimmage with a modified scoring system to evaluate his players.
The defense won the 143 play scrimmage, 28-22 with juniors Marcus Rush (DE) and Taiwan Jones (LB) leading the charge. Rush recorded six solo tackles and two sacks for 11 yards. Jones had a 6-yard sack, a 14-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, six total tackles with four solo tackles, two assists, and two for loss (8 yards).
Statistical position breakdown:

Special Teams: Freshman Michael Geiger went 7-for-8 in field goal attempts, two 48-yarders, while Red-shirt freshman Kevin Cronin 2-for-3 connecting on a 47-yarder.
Delton Williams played pretty well. Gerald Holmes has to hit the hole a little quicker, but these freshmen have to grow up fast out here. I thought Jeremy Langford and Nick Hill did some good things as well.
Bennie Fowler caught the ball pretty well and made some nice runs after the catch. He also showed leadership out there in the huddle. I liked the way he was talking to the guys.
Without watching the video, you’ve got to look at Michael Geiger as the bright spot of the scrimmage. He hit a 50-yarder (officially two 48-yarders). Michael had one bounce off the upright but other than that he was perfect, and they weren’t chip shots. Right now, he’s in the lead for that position.
