Football Recruiting: Jalyn Powell Signs LOI with Michigan State

The Michigan State Spartans signed their seventeenth commit at 9:35 a.m. on Signing Day, with Jalyn Powell, the no. 25 defensive back and no. 23 Ohio class of 2013 player.

Powell chose Mark Dantonio’s Spartans over the Michigan Wolverines and the West Virginia Mountaineers. He was the third player to commit to the team for the 2013 recruiting class. When he committed, he was unrated. He’s one of the rare players to gain rank as his senior year unfolds.

The three-star defensive back opted to move out of the state of Ohio, where he attended Harding High School in Warren. It is unclear as to whether he received any offers from an in state school, however, this versatile athlete will be a welcome addition to the Michigan State team.

This is Michigan State’s seventeenth signee of the day, adding to a class of 18 players in total. Of the 18 signees, two are defensive backs, Powell will be joining the already signed Darian Hicks in the class of 2013 recruits. The two will be joining two other defensive backs already on the Spartans team. Powell comes in as a 3-year starter. He was AP Division I first-team All-Ohio. As a senior, the 6’2″ 185 player recorded 85 tackles and five interceptions. Powell will be a welcome addition to the Spartans’ defensive line.
