Previewing Michigan State Women's Basketball vs. Michigan: What Fans Need to Know

The Michigan State Spartans women’s basketball team goes up against the Michigan Wolverines at 7:30 PM EST. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The game is especially significant since it’s the annual Play4Kay Pink game. Michigan State will be wearing pink uniforms. The Play4Kay Pink games raise money for women’s cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was named for the head coach of North Carolina State University, who passed away after a third bout with breast cancer in 2009. This game is intended to raise awareness for breast cancer research.

This game between the Spartans and the Wolverines promises to be a close one. Michigan State is 17-4 and 5-3 in Big Ten play. Michigan is 16-4 and also 5-3 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines are second only to Michigan State when it comes to defense, allowing only 52.7 points per game on average. Michigan State historically leads the series against Michigan 60-15, and they have won 15 straight games against the Ann Arbor team.

Today’s game in the Breslin Center will ride on the Spartans ability to keep their own turnovers down while forcing turnovers for the Wolverines. The last time they met, Michigan State won 65-63.

Possible starters for tonight’s game will be:

  • Kiana Johnson
  • Jasmine Thomas
  • Klarissa Bell
  • Courtney Schiffauer
  • Jasmine Hines

With the performance these ladies have recently given, they are sure to give Michigan a tough time. They have been good at locking down the leader on the other team and they have been good at forcing bad shots. Annalise Pickrel will also be a key player, once she comes into the game, if she can get into three-point shooting position.

We’ll have to see how it all comes down on the floor. Go Green! Go White!
