The Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines are meeting up against each other today at the Breslin Center. The Wolverines have strong offense that the Spartans will have to counteract with a strong defensive line. Michigan State’s leading scorer is Klarissa Bell with an average 12.0 points per game vs. Michigan’s points leader Kate Thompson with an average of 15.2 points per game.
The Wolverines are going into the game today after losing three of four of their last games. Three of the Wolverines are averaging in double digits, and they are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the nation. Michigan leads the Conference and is sixth in the nation for six pointers. Their average per game is 6.8 points past the arc.
Thompson is eighth in the big ten for her points per game average and second for her three-point shots made average (3.7 made per game). Klarissa Bell has been setting her career highs this season. She’s gone from someone who had a 2.2 shots per game average in her first 48 games with the Spartans to someone who has a 12.0 points per game average. In many games this season, Bell has racked up twenty or more points.
Kiana Jonson is second on the team for points scored per game with 10.8 points per game. She’s been on fire lately, herself, with her career high of 22 points in the game against Nebraska. Courtney Shiffauer is also a valuable part of the team, adding in her steadfast 6.9 points per game. Jasmine Hines is also a firecracker, proving herself to be productive when she’s on the floor. Even though she’s averaged just over 10 minutes per game, her points average is just over 5 points per game. Annalise Pickrel, who just hit her career high, is another high-hitter on the court.
While Michigan has higher averages, Michigan State has consistency on the floor. The Spartan women know how to pull together and move the ball around the court. They will need to keep Michigan out of the bonus and they will need to take shots when they can get them in order to combat the high-scoring offense of the Wolverines.
