Sunday at the Jenison Field House, the Michigan State Spartans faced off against the Bucknell University Bison and the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders on the wrestling mat. The Spartans were victorious, going 28-11 against the Bison and 28-12 against the Blue Raiders.
The Spartans started against Bucknell behind, as the Bison quickly won the first three matches, for a score of 11-0. When Dan Osterman, a senior from Carson City came to the mat, the Spartans’ luck changed. Following his match, the Spartans won seven straight matches against their woolly opponents. Mike McClure cleaned up the Bucknell University portion of the tournament with a 7-2 decision against Bucknell’s Joe Stolfi.
In the second half of the tournament, the Spartans once again started off slow. Redshirt freshman Roger Wildmo went up against Lindsey Wilson’s Zach McCormick and took home his first dual win – 5-2 for the 149 pound wrestler from Durand, Michigan.
Once Wildmo placed, the tempo began to build up for the Spartans, and they held the Blue Raiders at 12. Ryan Watts brought Vincent Favia down, 5-3. John Rizgallah remained undefeated for the Spartans with a 7-3 decision, and Luke Jones won his second match of the day with a whopping 11-1 decision, bringing the lead up to 22-12.
Michael McClure wrapped the game up. This number-five in the country junior wrestler pinned Jonathan Hupp in just over three minutes. His win brought the Spartans’ final win to 28-12.
The Spartans’ wrestling team is quite strong this season. On Saturday, January 12, they will go up against two teams: North Carolina and Clarion. On Sunday, January 13th they will face off against Penn State. Join us in cheering them on this season.
