December 2, 2012, the announcement was made official Michigan State Spartans will be playing against Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Florida in the 24th Annual Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.
In their last game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Spartans won 26-10 largely in part to junior Le’Veon Bell. In so doing, the team finished their season 6-6, becoming bowl eligible. Bell, who had his career-best rushing effort at 266 yards with 35 carries and the winning touchdown, is an All-American Candidate.
The showdown between TCU’s Horned Frogs and the Spartans will be the second such. In the only previous meeting between the two schools on October 10, 1953, the Horned Frogs lost 25-19 against MSU’s team. This will be the first Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl played by either team. Previously, the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl was known as the Copper and the Insight Bowl. This is the 23rd time the Michigan State Spartans have made a bowl appearance in the team’s history, and it’s the sixth-consecutive year that the school has been bowl eligible. Previous bowls have been:
- December 28, 2007 Champs Sports Bowl – MSU Spartans vs. Boston College Eagles 21-24
- January 1, 2009 Capital One Bowl – MSU Spartans vs. Georgia Bulldogs 12-24
- January 2, 2010 Alamo Bowl – MSU Spartans vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders 31-41
- January 1, 2011 Capital One Bowl – MSU Spartans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide 7-49
- January 2, 2012 Outback Bowl – MSU Spartans vs. Georgia Bulldogs 33-30
The Horned Frogs go into the BWW Bowl with a 7-5, 4-5 Big Twelve Conference record compared to the Spartans 6-6, 3-5 Big Ten Record. This is their 29th bowl conference; their bowl record is 13-14-1, and they possess 15 conference championship titles. This won’t stop the sturdy Spartans, however. Last year’s bowl appearance against the Georgia Bulldogs landed them with a triple overtime win, and they have made bowl appearances 8 times since 2000.
Spartan Coach Mark Dantonio is optimistic, looking forward both to bringing his team to Tempe, Florida and to finishing the season on a strong point. Such a win would build morale for the 2013 Spartans football team.
The game will air on ESPN at 10:15pm EST and 7:15pm PST December 29, 2012. Who do you think will win? Do the Spartans stand a chance against the powerhouse team of the Horned Frogs?
