Michigan State football added Furman to its 2016 schedule, Furman announced Tuesday.
The two programs will play Sept. 17 at Spartan Stadium for the first time.
FBSchedules.com provided the following details about the matchup:
“We’re pleased to add Michigan State to our 2016 football schedule and look forward to the challenge,” Furman director of athletics Dr. Gary Clark said.
Furman, located in Greenville, SC, is a member of the Southern Conference in the Football Championship Division. The Paladins have never faced a team from the Big Ten, but they did play Penn State back in 1958 when the Nittany Lions were an Independent.
The addition of Furman completes Michigan State’s 2016 football schedule. The Spartans open the 2016 season at Alabama on Sept. 3 and then host Eastern Michigan on Sept. 10. After facing Furman, Michigan State hosts Notre Dame on Sept. 24 to complete the non-conference portion of their schedule.
In Big Ten play, the Spartans will host Iowa, Ohio State, Nebraska, and Northwestern and will travel to face Michigan, Indiana, Penn State, and Minnesota.
