Izzo adds Lansing Sexton guard to 2012 class

by Basketball

Tom Izzo received yet another verbal commitment today, this time for his 2012 recruiting class. Giving Izzo his verbal pledge was Lansing Sexton guard Denzel Valentine, son of former MSU forward and current Sexton coach Carlton Valentine.

The younger Valentine averaged 11 ppg, six rebounds and seven dimes last season as a sophomore for Sexton High and has greatly improved his stock after a solid performance this past month on the AAU circuit. Valentine is currently unranked by Scout and Rivals, but figures to get a good rating when the first rankings come out for the class of 2012.

Valentine, who stands in at 6’5″ and 205 lbs., chose MSU over offers from Georgetown, Michigan, Butler and Oakland, but having been the son of a former Spartan, there was no other option for Denzel than to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“Just being around MSU my whole life, I felt this was the best decision for me to make,” Denzel Valentine told the Free Press. “I liked Coach Izzo’s honesty about where I would fit in his program as a player.” His father added, “It wasn’t a no-brainer that he’d automatically go to MSU.”

Valentine’s verbal, paired with that from Kenny Kaminski last week, gives MSU two commitments for the class of 2012, meaning that there is only one spot available.
